BILLYWIGS PROMO VIDEO...

A group I am involved with is an Australian online Harry Potter forum called Billywigs. Early in 2010, I held a shoot in an effort to create a short promo video for the group. Several of the NSW members dressed up in their excellent Harry Potter style costumes and they were filmed in front of a green screen. The shoot took one day and then several months of post production created the following little video.

As the entire shoot was in front of a green screen, it meant that I had to create the worlds that the actors were supposed to be in. This meant a LOT of 3D work ranging from simple backgrounds right up to a completed animated flying sequence. These sort of effects take an incredible amount of time and is a slow and often frustrating process.  As I was also dealing with full high definition resolutions, it really pushed my computing power to the extreme.

The deadline was April when the video was to be debuted at Supanova in Brisbane, Australia's biggest pop culture expo. Unfortunately, this deadline meant that I had to rush several aspects of this promo. One being the soundtrack. I am not happy with the music. Anyway, it was shown to the public with a positive response and while there are several aspects that could be improved, it is good enough for the role it was intended. Plus the lessons learnt during this production will certainly help with future special effects projects.
